How do Essential Oils Work in Your Body?

 

 

 

 

Essential oils are volatile molecules in a plant that have a noticeable fragrance and actively work to help promote systematic regulation and healthful modification of cells. 

Molecules in one drop of EO: 40 million trillion molecules 

How Human Cells work?

Cells in human body: 40-100 trillion cells

Cell Structure: Cell is make of molecules and a molecule is made of atoms. 

There are between 5 million and 2 trillion molecules in a cell but half of that is water.

Perspective: 85% of you is water. 60% of that water is inside cells.

Atomic Mass Units is the molecular weight of any given substance.
Hydrogen 1 amu or dalton

Human cell is 10-12 amu

Oxygen is 16 amu

Water is 18 amu.

Isoprene units are what all EO are made of and they weigh only 68 amu. These isoprene units are what make up terpenes such as Monoterpenes and Sesquiterpenes found in distilled oils.

  • Phenylpropanoids are 1 isoprene unit at 68 amu. (Clove, Cinnamon, Basil, Oregano)
  • Monoterpenes have 2 isoprene unites and are 136 amu (Tea Tree, Hyssop, Frankincense)
  • Sesquiterpenes have 3 isoprene unites and are 204 amu (Sandalwood, Cedrwood, Vetiver, Myrrh)
  • Diterpenes have 4 isoprene units and are 272 amu (Cypress, Jasmine)
     

All distilled oils have an amu of less than 300. When you use expressed oils such as citrus, the amu can be in the 400-500 range. 

Essential oils have the ability to effect or modulate gene expression through mRNA (messenger RNA) by inducing pathways to promote cell growth and self-defense. 

Gene expression is important because it dictates cell function. How cells function dictates how you live and feel about that life. Do you feel good or bad, sick or well?
